?The
meeting place bar and brasserie? was opened in early 2000 with the
owners Gary and Elaine Breen attempting to bring a European style to an
area north of Toronto. With previous experience in the restaurant trade
while in Britain they felt there was a need to supply the people of Stouffville
with a casual place to enjoy a fine bottle of wine or a pint of imported
beer to accompany one of their award winning entrees. The food could be
best described as international with tastes from as far afield as Thailand,
with Satay, to Indian Samosas to North American Favourites like Jack Daniels
glazed St. Louis ribs. All the food is freshly prepared even down to the
fresh lime dijon mayonnaise used with the calamari. ?The client can
taste the difference? is one of the brasseries catchlines and they
really can. Salad dressings from a bottle do not compare with the taste
which explode on your tongue when you try a fabulous homemade balsamic
dressing. The bar itself is cozy with a great atmosphere which centres
around the antique oak bar placed in the centre of the restaurant. The
bar itself is from a demolished grand Pennsylvania Hotel built in 1912,
which was transported to Stouffville in 1995, that is the bar not the
hotel. It takes pride of place and has appeared in two magazine shoots.
The reputation
for the food in the town is unsurpassed and the wine list was chosen to
compliment the fine selection of entrees. Throughout the week there are
a number of events and features which have proved to be a great success.
Wednesday has the popular Jam Night where recording artists as well as
amateurs enjoy a mid-week sing-a-long. The place has a real party atmosphere
when a classic rock song is sung. Thursday is $10 Pasta night with gourmet
pasta sauces prepared by the head chef and combined with classic ingredients
like portobello mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes, and served on a bed
of fresh spinach fettucine or linguine. When the weekend rolls up there
is the Journeys Around The World menu. Each week ?the meeting place?
chooses a country and uses that country as an inspiration for the weekends
Dinner specials. Thai , Mexican, Moroccan, Spanish and even Californian
cuisine has been prepared with great success. Ingredients like Pacific
Swordfish, pinto beans and chipotle peppers appear, to tempt the tastebuds
of any customer. When Sunday arrives ?the meeting place? figures
that you may have had enough of the fancy stuff and delivers up a great
Eggs Benedict or Belly-Buster Breakfast so you start the day right and
then lets you choose from the ?Gourmet Burger Menu?. A new twist
on this North American Classic with choices of toppings ranging from Texan
Barbeque sauce to black Kalamata Olives to the King itself, the ?ELVIS?
burger, it?s big, and should come with a government health warning
for bigness.
